21 Haiku

A bearded cloud man
—his hat like a roof or road—
laughing in the sky

An orange lozenge
swallowed by the sea again—
slow summer sunset

Bright fang of a moon
over a vanishing shore—
and now it’s night

*

A tree’s red tassels
against a grey summer sky—
home to many birds

An ordinary fool
with a pocket-watch heart—
napping sick at noon

Evening train—somber
woman exits with her son
who has the same face

*

Crescent moon, gull, plane—
all sharing the same blue sky!
Summer afternoon

Wind-blown clouds race past
a phantom sliver of moon—
last light in the west

Moon dims and brightens
as veils of clouds wander by
in mid-summer dusk

*

Two girls on the train
sit opposite each other
putting on make-up

Evening train—a man
standing in a wild plaid shirt
smiling to himself

Alone on the train—
is everyone out drinking?
Briefcase and white shirt

*

Sunny afternoon—
flitting white butterfly makes
the garden greener

A swirling white pair
of butterflies overhead—
mating ritual?

A butterfly lands
on a sunny cobblestone—
a bird’s lazy chirping

*

A shy smiling girl
sits alone on the church steps—
the six o’clock bells

Face in the mirror
just before bedtime—I smear
cold cream on crow’s feet

Want to diddlydoo
but the cat’s between my legs—
what’s more delightful?

*

Morning train station—
a fast-passing panoply
clutching coffee cups

Elevated train
speeding through the mist above
broccoli tree tops

Hissing hydraulics
of the train in the station—
waiting to move on

Leave Here Running

Got crocked in the hotel bar
Feeling like I lost my star
A man can fall so far
Crocked in the hotel bar

Earlier I felt so good
Like I finally understood
Now I’m drowning in a mood—like I’ve been
Stranded on the moon

I thought I had come
To a pause in the war
But here I am again I’m feeling
Lost in the storm—I’ve got to
Leave here running but I
Don’t know where to go

I gotta get out of this place
I’m staring at the devil’s face!
He’s laughing at my disgrace—the whole human
Race has the devil’s face!

Why must I wander?

What am I stumbling under?
I think I’m into something that could make a fellow
Come undone—I hope I’m wrong!

Quivering meat
Out in the street
There’s a hunger gnawing all
The people I see—I’ve got to
Leave here running ‘cause
A man has got to be

(All my life I’ve been
Lost and wondering
I’ll my life I’ve been
Running somewhere
But I am always here)

A branch of lightning gleams
Feels like it’s reaching me
Doesn’t need to be believed
A branch of lightning gleams

A flash in the night
A flash in my mind
I’m looking for a light while I’m
Groping blind—I’ve got to
Leave here running but I
Don’t know what I’ll find

Might lose my mind!

18 Haiku

A liquid whistling
song of a bird I can’t see—
light morning breeze

On opposite sides
of the house two cars drive by—
one north and one south

Clouds like invaders,
dragon-shaped, overtaking
those ahead of them

*

These trees are alive!
Those big blank buildings are not!
—breeze stirring the leaves

The words roll upward
on a red-lighted sign in
the subway station

A girl next door squeals
as I stare out the window—
V of gulls sails by

*

Sitting in lotus—
already better than I
was before I sat

In the mist, the wires
sizzle overhead—bird perched
up there doesn't care

Artists are surfers—
when your wave comes, you've got to
ride it all the way

*

A synthetic voice
from the night parking garage—
alone in the fog

Don’t see him until
he starts tapping at a tree—
morning woodpecker

Hot days—our so-called
“Hurdy Gurdy Birdy!” sings
this, and “Pweep! Pweep! Pweep!”

*

He struggles against
wind pouring above the lake—
flapping little bird

Bored shirtless young men
carry rocks from the lake bed
for a free boat ride

A dead silver fish
in the little girl’s basket—
she wants to keep it

*

Orange sunset glows
through chinks in the cooling trees—
my shirt is still sweaty

Barefoot kids popping
July Fourth firecrackers—
done before dark

Driving in the heat—
soft gusts through the half-open
passenger window

Glad You Got Away

Blue bird out there romping
I saw him on the lawn
Blue bird out there romping
I saw him all alone
Leapt up out of bed
And grabbed my camera

Green hills shining
Shining in the sun
Background for the blue bird
I had to get this one
Catch that frozen moment
Before it all was gone

Don’t fly don’t fly fly
Don’t you fly away!
Don’t fly no don’t you fly
Don’t you fly away!

My my my!
What a lovely sight
My mind was like a diamond
Reminding me I’m alive
Then the blue bird flickered
And was in the sky

Fly fly fly fly
Fly away!
You’re bigger than a picture
And you got away
You’re bigger than a picture and I’m
Glad you got away!

Flashes 16

Maybe everybody
has a little
space alien in them

High-heeled
torture
shoes

A pretty girl
with ugly
feet

*

To feel that great
sad aching nerve
at the soul of everything

Lust
like an itch
you can't scratch

She looks
hard to rouse
from herself

*

Many a loud
Jesus and pseudo Jesus
out there

Who can tell
what makes someone else
happy?

The work seemed bad then,
when I wasn’t
ready for it

*

Your inner
space alien
is cosmic!

14 Country Haiku

Clopping of horses'
hooves on the cobblestone street
gets the dogs barking

Husky male voices
in the evening street—I don't
know what they're saying

It's nice just to watch
these leaves, blown and glowing green
in the late spring breeze

*

A dry pine cone drops
with a cracking sound against
a fallen brother

A rooster crowing
in the dark—we're both awake
before we should be

A red-eyed fly lands
on my pants and stares at me,
then sputters away

*

Mushroom hunting, we
hide in the trees from the wind—
flickering shadows

Afternoon squalling
of a cock across the street—
what's bothering him?

Ant and ladybug
busy themselves on the leaves
of a late spring peach

*

So many voices—
I emerge from sleep at dawn
and listen to birds

A bell shudders with
the clopping of horses' hooves—
creaking wooden cart

Bird sits twittering
on a wire while winds bellow
behind him at dawn

*

Lying on a rug
in the cool shade of the house,
not wanting to move

Up the mountain road
a bent white-haired woman walks
at a right angle

.

20 Haiku

Early summer heat—
every day the mountain's
snow patch seems smaller

Sudden cool shadow
as I lay reading the word
"Coolness" in a book

Unbelievable—
caging this beautiful bird
for our amusement

*

Fitness club entrance—
a drowsy slouching woman
lights a cigarette

Little puff of cloud
hanging in a blue noon sky—
a man's yelling face

Cool summer morning—
the cat gazes at me, then goes
back to eating grass

*

Like an insistent
old friend visiting again—
this morning's boner

A bird flees the blast
of a siren's scream somewhere—
cat yawns and stretches

A sudden wind like
the pouring of a bucket—
the rippling grasses

*

Little gnat struggling
in a pool in a beer glass—
my penknife saves it

His ironic nose—
when he's sincere it betrays
something cynical

The cat hides her face
while sleeping the sunlight—
breath rises and falls

*

Domed sky with splotches
of twilit clouds—all my life
I've been a fool

Broken moods of three
different wines at dinner—
half-empty bottles

Summer afternoon—
she enters the dark house, sky
blazing behind her

*

Vast tiger head
presiding in a cloud bank—
look back and it’s gone

Lonely little face
in a knot in the floorboard—
too sad to believe

Brilliant green leaves
rippling in a pouring breeze—
sleepy chirping bird

*

A yellow spider
crawling up my brown pant leg—
does he think it’s earth?

Walking west at dawn,
our long shadows precede us—
bird cries like a child
