Before You Go

Who hated a happy hippy high?

Who couldn’t smile into the other guy’s eyes?

Who watched a wide-winged hawk glide on the wind?

Who knew no money man can dance like Freaky Johnny?

Who spat
“That jive died with Christ!” at a friend who needed kindness?

Who flung crumbs at pigeons?

Who paid to gaze at caged lives?

Who saw a daisy lie down with lions and die?

Who worked for men with cigarette-butt eyes?

Who wondered
Does grass mind being walked on?

Who smirked when he should have screamed?

Who wrote a bad short story called “Ice Coma”?

Who smelled his own stink in the rain?

Who despised being vicious and weak and one day suddenly stopped?

Who waited for his soul catch up with him?

Who raced to catch up with his soul?
